The year was 1772. Now 225 years ago.
The humble and faithful Reverend Fawcett had been pastor of the small congregation since his first days in the ministry. He loved his people and they loved him. At no time had he ever earned more than $200.00 in any year. He was happy among the sheep in his flock, yet he had received a call to go to a large famous church and become pastor there.

All personal and family household belongings were loaded into wagons, while people and family stood around waiting to share their final good-byes. On the front porch, just prior to departure, Mrs. Fawcett told her loving husband that she just simply could not bring herself to leave all their friends. The Reverend said he agreed, and that he could not leave them either. So the decision was made to unpack and stay.

That same week the pastor wrote a song that expressed what he felt in his heart about the bond between his family and the congregation. It became a regular practice for them to sing when dismissing from their church meetings. For the next 45 years he remained pastor of the small church, and during those years received many awards of honor and recognition, among which was a Doctorate of Divinity from Brown University. He also became a well-known scholar and preacher and wrote a number of widely-circulated books.

The simple song he wrote gives a glimpse of the man's heart by saying:

"BLEST BE THE TIE THAT BINDS,
OUR HEARTS IN CHRISTIAN LOVE.
THE FELLOWSHIP OF KINDRED MINDS,
IS LIKE TO THAT ABOVE ......

In all his life and work, The Reverend Fawcett shows us that indeed, bigger is not always better.
