"JUST WHAT DID SHE EVER DO?
Stories Behind Songs of Inspiration.

1915.Just two years before World War I. There were still horses and buggies on the streets, and most houses did not have indoor plumbing, or electricity. People, by our standards today, lived pretty much the same as they had for centuries.

Imagine and old woman is sitting on her front porch just weeks before her death. Two youngsters walk by. She speaks to them. They ignore her because in their youth they think that she's old, worn out, and for the most part, useless. What could she do for them? for that matter, what did she ever do for them? On top of being old, she is blind!

WHAT DID SHE EVER DO?

Little did our imaginary teeny boppers know. They did not realize that this 95 year old woman had been the best friend of many. Little did our young street-walkers know that this ... ol'bag-a-bones ...though totally blind, had been one of the most prolific and sought-after songwriters in her lifetime, and perhaps for all time.

It has been estimated that this frail body, with unseeing eyes, housed a human spirit that had written over 8,000 songs and hymns. She was so desired as a songwriter that she used over 200 pen names. The story is told of a friend coming to her with a tune and playing it on the piano. Upon hearing the tune, the Senior Citizen said, "Why that tune says,

"BLESSED ASSURANCE - JESUS IS MINE."

The rest of the story (as the saying goes) is history.
What did this old woman ever do? No human knows the extent of her labors, but let her tombstone epitaph speak for her ...

"FANNY CROSBY SHE HATH DONE WHAT SHE COULD."

In the Baptist Hymnal that we use at Arlanza, we have thirteen (13) of her hymns, alone.
Can the same be said about the rest of us?
Her life span was from 1820 until 1915.
