Moundsville Christian School Curriculum

Our Curriculum for Kindergarten through Sixth Grade

Kindergarten at Moundsville Christian School is a wholesome learning experience. Children progress academically through a variety of learning procedures such as stories, songs, upbeat drills and memorization. As learning progresses, skills are built upon and total learning takes place. Moral and spiritual developments are extremely important to us at MCS. Opportunities to learn of Jesus Christ and Christian living are presented daily, not only through our Bible curriculum but also through each academic area throughout the day. Our Kindergarten uses Bob Jones University Press Curriculum for Bible, phonics/reading, writing, numbers, and science & heritage. Some A Beka phonics drills and other materials are incorporated into the curriculum as well. Some highlights of our students Kindergarten education include counting, addition, telling time, money usage, writing and most importantly reading. First Grade at MCS provides a wide variety of learning techniques and materials. Most lessons are correlated to reinforce skills throughout the day. Our First Grade Bible, phonics/reading, spelling, language, penmanship, mathematics, science, history and health curriculums are published by A Beka Books. Students in first grade at MCS progress from one vowel words to stories, fables and poems with comprehension being enforced through written and oral work. Students learn to spell by sounding out words and learn such language skills as capitalization, punctuation, creative writing and syllables. Math skills such as addition, subtraction, place, value, thermometers and fractions are learned and American history, United States geography and world geography are covered. Second Grade at MCS emphasizes the language arts and math with the introduction of borrowing, carrying and even basic multiplication. A Beka Books is the publisher of our Bible, writing, math and health curriculum while Bob Jones provides our reading, english, spelling, history and science curriculum. Story event, sequencing, anology, characterization, story parts and vocabulary are discovered in our reading curriculum. The students begin to learn cursive writing, roman numerals and how to be a valuable part of their community. In Third Grade, language arts is the core of our curriculum with emphasis moving from phonics to story detail and development of characters. Mathematics covers multiplication and division while reviewing addition and subtraction. Work is also done with English and Metric units of measure as well as story problems and fractions. Our Bible, writing, math and health curriculum is provided by A Beka Books while our reading, english, history and science are by Bob Jones. Some highlights of the third grade year are early American history to post revolution America studies, and a cursive writing review system with ties to phonics rules similar to Zaner-Bloser. In Fourth grade, much work is done in language arts on story detail, anology, critical interpretation of story events as well as vocabulary. Math focuses on reviewing addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, story problems, measurement equations and introducing fractions and decimals. Our reading, english, spelling, history and science are Bob Jones while our writing, math, and health are A Beka. Bible is a blend of both. Post revolution America through the early 1900's are studied and the characterstics of Christianity are used to help review cursive writing. Fifth Grade at MCS begins in depth studies of the Acts of the Apostles, the Epistles and the book of Revalation. Fifth grade mathematics brings the study of geometry along with the review of all previously learned math principles. Our Bible, reading, science and english are Bob Jones curriculums while A Beka provides our mathematics, writing and social studies. The geography and cultures of Europe and their relationship to the new world are the focus of social studies while european and American history are incorporated into the subject matter. Students learn more about proper sentence structure and paragraph composition while discerning different types of literature (fables, historical fiction, realistic fiction, science fiction, etc.) Our Sixth Graders at MCS spend much time reading the classics of American Literature such as Little Women, Call it Courage and Treasure Island. Emphasis is placed on comprehension and on building a foundation of literary form. Painting with words, proper forms of paragraphing and avoiding irrelavent information are included. Our Bible, reading, spelling, science and english are Bob Jones curriculum while our mathematics, writing and social studies are by A Beka Books. This year's Bible curriculum focuses on the Old Testament including the study of the pentateuch, the books of history and poetry and the major and minor prophets. Mathematics introduces percentages and reading and constructing graphs along with a review of all basic and geometric principles. Social studies covers the Western Hemisphere bginning with a survey of North, Cental, and South America. It then proceeds into United States history: explorers, the Revolution, the Civil War and the two world wars. The scientific method is studied and topics are discussed concerning creation and evolutionary statements. Students are given a strong preparation in dealing with theories later to be thrown at the by evolutionists.

An Overview

As you can see, Moundsville Christian School's board and teachers put much time and effort into choosing the best possible curriculum for our students. We blend Bob Jones University Press curriculums with those of A Beka Books to ensure that our students receive a quality education. Biblical principals are taught not only in our Bible curriculums but in each curriculum throughout the day. The students study all of the basic health principles and gym, music and art classes are provided as well. All of our science courses offer opportunities for hands on experimentation and learning. The school has it's own library and the teachers also provide reading materials for the children. Computers are also used by all of our students and the school has it's own computer lab. Our small class sizes ensure that each student will receive individual help and attention when needed. Informational field trips are held throughout the school year. We hope that this information helps to answer any questions that you may have about our curriculum at Moundsville Christian School. Obviously, we cannot give a detailed account of all the things we study in a school year here on our web page so please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.
