What is our hope?
The Fruit of the Spirit, a study of Galatians 5:19-23
The Book of Life
Events following the return of Jesus Christ (rapture)

As Christians we have a great hope that is alive in us. The bible says to be ready always to give an answer to anyone who would ask you of the hope you have. If we are to be ready, we must understand what that hope is. Here is a study of what we hope for.

1 Pet 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

Hope: G=Elpis - To anticipate, with pleasure. To expect, have confidence.

Acts 2:26-27 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell.

Acts 24:15 And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.

1 Cor 15:19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

We not only have hope for Christ to be with us in this lifetime, but we also have hope of the resurrection and that we will be with him in the next. If we did not have this hope, we would be miserable

1 Th 5:8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

We are saved from wrath (Luke 21:36) to an eternal life with Christ and God in heaven.

Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

Titus 3:7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Rom 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

The glory will be revealed in us.

Eph 1:17-19 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: (18) The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, (19) And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

By the spirit that dwells within you he prays it enlightens you with revelation knowledge so that your heart can understand the hope of his calling and the rich glory we have inherited by being adopted children of God, also to understand his great power that is given to us who believe.

Col 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Christ dwells within us - showing to us a portion of the Glory of God and doing a work in us.

1 Th 2:19 For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?

Our hope is for those we have helped bring to the Lord to stand and be ready at the return of Christ.

1 Th 4:13-17 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. (14) For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. (15) For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. (16) For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: (17) Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

The word "prevent" in v.15 means "precede". This means those who are alive when Christ returns will not go up before those who are dead. For God will first raise up those who have already died, but in the very next moment in time he will then raise those who are alive.

Look forward to that day with great anticipation. Don't sorrow as those who sorrow, having no knowledge of what happens to the body after death. But you know what is going to happen according to these scriptures, so rejoice in that knowledge.

2 Cor 3:12 Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech.

Gal 5:5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.

Why does it say we "wait" instead of we "have"? For we now have been made right by our faith, and that is our hope, that in the eyes of God we are righteous.

Heb 7:19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.

Under the new covenant we have personal approach to God which no man had under the law.

Eph 2:12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

Before Christ, anyone who was not Jewish was a Gentile and not part of the promises of God. But now, because of Christ, he has broken down the dividing wall, and we have been grafted in and have the new covenant of promise.

Col 1:5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;

(Heb 6:19) Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul,
both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

When you have the hope alive and real in your everyday thoughts,
thinking and pondering the real possibility that Jesus could come back today
and if he did, I would be in heaven for all eternity - starting today -
and continuously thinking on what our life is going to be like in heaven,
it truly gives you a different prospective on whatever you are going through today.
That hope truly does act as an anchor that keeps us from being blown about
by the storms that come and go through our lives.

A study of Galatians 5

Gal 5:19-23 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, (20) Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, (21) Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. (22) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, (23) Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

These are manifestations that will be evident in oneís life as he/she lives in the spirit.

1. LOVE - Greek=AGAPE
Divine love. A strong, ardent, tender, compassionate, devotion to the well-being of someone.

2. JOY - Greek=CHARA
The emotional excitement, gladness, delight over blessings received or expected for self and for others.

The state of quietness, rest, repose, harmony, order, and security in the midst of turmoil, strife, and temptations.

Patient endurance; to bear long with the frailties, offenses, injuries, and provocations of others, without murmuring, repining, or resentment.

The state of being good, kind, virtuous, benevolent, generous, and God-like in life and conduct.

The living, divine implanted, acquied, and created principle of inward and wholehearted confidence, assurance, trust and reliance on God and all that He says.

The disposition to be gentle, kind, indulgent, even balanced in tempers and passion, and patient in suffering injuries without feeling a spirit of revenge.

Self control; a moderation in the indulgence of the appetite and passions.

(They which do such things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God - Gal 5:21)

Below are some examples of where the bible talks about the book of life. The reason for this study is to try to understand how one gets his/her name written in the book of life, and if it can ever be taken out, or erased.

Exo 32:32-33 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written. (:33) And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.

Psa 69:28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.

Dan 12:1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

Phil 4:3 And I entreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.

Rev 3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

Rev 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Rev 17:8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

Rev 20:11-15 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. (12) And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. (13) And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. (14) And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. (15) And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Rev 22:18-19 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: (19) And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

Rev 21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

Luke 10:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

Neh 4:5 And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders.

Psa 69:28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.

Psa 109:13 Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out. (14) Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.

Isa 44:22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.

Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

Num 5:23 And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out with the bitter water:

Deu 9:14 Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven: and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they.

Deu 29:20 The LORD will not spare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven.

2 Ki 14:27 And the LORD said not that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven: but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.

Psa 51:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

Psa 51:9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

Col 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; (15) And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

It is not extremely clear to me, but it would seem that we all have our name written in the book of life, perhaps from birth. Then, when we sin, and do not repent, our names can be blotted out. But, when we have repented of our sins and are found righteous before God, our names remain written in the book. Sins that are blotted out are no longer held against a person. Is it possible to have our names blotted out because we have again sinned against God and not repented, such as being in a back-slidden state? It would seem to be from these verses that it is possible. But, remember I am just studying, and am not an authority.

In all the above cases, the meaning is clear - "blotting out" is a complete cancellation and annulment of whatever was blotted out. A name being blotted out of the book of life means that it is not longer in the book. If a name is not found in the book of life, that person will not have a place in heaven.
