DEFINITION OF SERVICE

The Holman Bible Dictionary (1991 ed.) defines service as “work done for other people or for God and the worship of God”.  Being a servant is not a selfish act.  It is a selfless act that is done for the benefit of God or for the benefit of others.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A SERVANT OF THE LORD?

What does it mean to be a servant of the Lord?  Many leaders from the bible were referred to as the servant of the Lord.   These included Jesus, Moses, David, and even Israel as a nation.  In Isaiah 41:8-9, God identifies Israel as His chosen (in the verse below) when he relays to Israel their position as God’s servant.  God also notes that they are not being rejected by God, but they are actually chosen by God to carry out service for Him.

“But you, O Israel, my servant,
Jacob, whom I have chosen,
You descendants of Abraham my friend,
I took you from the ends of the earth,
From its farthest corners I called you
I said, ‘You are my servant’;
I have chosen you and have not rejected you.”
Isaiah 41:8-9

FOLLOW JESUS’ EXAMPLE
In striving the serve God, we should seek to be more like Jesus.  Jesus set the perfect example for us, as He continually served God while living on earth.  We should seek to follow Christ in all that we do.  We should reach out to others in hopes that, through each of us, God will make a tremendous impact on those around us.

Jesus is the ultimate example of being a servant of God.  Jesus served God by bringing judgment and God’s justice to the earth, even though the task was immense.  Jesus served with confidence in the task at hand, understanding of His overwhelming power, knowledge of God’s truth, and a commitment to His responsibility as God’s son and servant.  This is how we should serve God daily.  We should seek to be like Jesus.  Of course, we cannot be exactly like Jesus, but in seeking to be like Him, we are growing closer and closer to God.

DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED

God wants us to serve Him by seeking others.  Our responsibility is to be a guide in directing others to the truth about Christ.  We need to relay that sin separates us from God, but God provides a way of forgiveness for our sins.  It is only by accepting that Jesus died for our sins and asking God to enter into our lives and transform us forever, that we are saved and identified by God as His children.  If we are truly saved from sin and death, then we know what it is like to once be separated from God and now know the amazing way that God can transform our lives.  We should relate our testimony to others and share this gift of eternal life with others.  This is our duty.  But what if they do not decide to accept Christ?  It is not our responsibility to save the lost.  Salvation belongs to God!  Our responsibility is to relay the truth about Christ to others and allow the Holy Spirit to work through your sharing of God’s love.  Remember that if you do not receive instant results that you still may have planted a seed that may either make sense to the person later or perhaps even prompt them to ask another Christian questions in the future that may lead them to receive God’s salvation.  So, do not be discouraged.  Just simply serve God and let Him do the rest.
